Sunday, half past seven

The kettle was already on when I came down. I filled the saucepan, put the lid on badly, and it slid off twice before it stayed. Onions first: peel, chop, and try not to cry into the board. My brother stood at the sink washing yesterday's cutlery, because nobody had done it and we had run out of forks. The salt was on the top shelf, of course, where nobody can reach it. I let the whole thing cook slowly and went back to stir it every few minutes. By nine there was more than we could eat, so the leftovers went into the fridge in a box with no lid at all.
